English

English is a crucial subject in the school curriculum, and it plays a vital role in the education and overall development of students. Rockingham Beach Education Support Centre is committed to delivering an innovative learning program which recognises the inherent qualities and uniqueness of all students and teachers, including subtle differences in how they each learn. Our school’s learning programs are based on a culture of high expectations for all learners.

Reading - Read Write Inc.

Read Write Inc. is a phonics programme which teaches students the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing. Read Write Inc. Phonics includes reading books written using only the letters they have learnt at each level (and a small number of separately taught tricky words e.g., sight words).

The students are assessed by the Read Write Inc. lead teacher and grouped according to their ability. Small group phonics lessons are taught daily by trained staff. At the end of each term the students are assessed to check on their progress and regrouped accordingly.

Writing - Talk For Writing

At Rockingham Beach Education Support Centre students across all year levels are taught writing using Talk for Writing (T4W). It is a program that was developed in the United Kingdom by Pie Corbett and has benefits for children across all ranges of abilities and backgrounds.

T4W allows students to orally learn the language needed for a particular topic or text, before reading it and recreating it in their own writing. It focuses on high level vocabulary and is also very hands on and interactive. Talk for Writing is a very engaging way of learning to write different text types. Teachers work in teams to create highly motivating and differentiated units of work, using popular nursery rhymes and books.
